Today marks International Literacy Day, which celebrates and raises awareness of the importance of literacy to all countries and cultures. Worldwide, over 775 million adults struggle with basic literacy, and two-thirds of this figure are women. While literacy rates have grown significantly over the last 10 years and in the UK, the literacy rate is 99%, this still means that 1 in every 100 people struggle to read and write.
This is a great opportunity to discuss the power and value of words with children. Why not ask them to think about and discuss:
What would life be like without the privilege of being able to read and write?
How does being literate empower people?
Who are some of your favourite authors? What do you like about them in particular?
If there was one thing that you would like everyone to read, what would it be and why?
You can visit https://wordsforlife.org.uk/ for loads of great tips and activities (from birth to 12 years) to support your child’s learning around literacy.
Here are some of my daughter's current favourite reads - I definitely have an addiction to buying children's books! If you have pre-school/ early years children, you may recognise some of these. I hope you all get the chance to enjoy a little read today!
